Making a comeback

G A M B ANG R E S O R T

Hey guys,

Last week I went to an oasis-like Gambang Resort celebrating PASB family day. Memang best. Mula-mula kena pergi ke sekolah kanak2 OKU in Kemaman di mana mengecat menjadi tugas utama kami di samping menjaga adik2 OKU ni mewarna. Memang fun ar plus diorang memang hebat color. Yang makan pencil color pun ade gak. On the other hand, my painting part, I have no comment sebab agak mengecawakan sebenarnya. Tangan biasa pegang spanar, mana reti pegang2 berus ni. Pegang berus gigi atau berus tandas hebat ar. Anyway we managed to finish it nonetheless with engineering aspect included e.g dry thickness = 50 micron, wet thickness = 100 micron haha.

the kid at the back was tired just by looking at us. Now you realize how tough our painting job was that day huh =)

Rite after that, the treasure hunt began. Yeah I know u'd say that, I was so damn excited. Belom habis announce dah gerak. First, kener susun gambar2 yang macam puzzle accordingly plus kener teka gambar ape tu. Ade ker die suruh teka gamba perut Kangaroo Mascot Tunas Manja Kemaman???

And after solat Jumaat. Now the best part, happened at Kelab Kebudayaan Cherating. 'Menconteng' batik??? Mengayam tikar??? Seriously it was hard especially mengayam tikar.

With the theme: 3T (Tribute to Turtle)

but experience kat Gambang is beyond words can describe. Tele-match yang kitorang main mmg lawak. Skiing Makcik is my personal fav. Kena pakai scarf, kain sarong, paris-hilton-like sunglasses, neck scarf and handbag sambil skiing. TERBAIK ARR! tapi ade trick dalam telematch nie, siapa yang paling pandai tipu menang. Since kitorang suma group warga2 soleh dan beriman, mana laa pandai tipu2 nie... jawabnya mmg takkan jadi juara ar. Takpe, atleast kurang menipu, kurang dosa sket LOL

Other than bermandi manda at the water park, malam penutupan itu was the best. Bertemakan "Hawaiian Nite". Nasib meja bujang mmg bertuah, all of us menang hadiah cabutan bertuah, ... thumbdrive, water heater, hamper (got wine in it lah pulak), G-shock watches, n gas voucher bernilai RM 50. Nice

.
Red Team... loser!

Si kAncil

Aish baru2 ni ade pegi Pfce raya punya open house. There were literally thousands of people. Tak sure diorang jemput semua warga petronas kat kerteh atau tak. Anyway I met Mohan si machinist yang sangat pakar (I thought I know how to use vernier caliper, micrometer and what not until I met this guy who's been using all these measuring tools for more than 30 years. His measuring skill undoubtedly... the best ar. Orang kata, bukan saya kata, orang kata ader style la dia ukur bender2 aper pun. *Recap* BENDA2 aper sekalipun!!! LOL.

Hey you dirty minds, I'm talking about machining stuff here. Anyway... talking about kancil. Dah la kereta banyak so susah la nk cari parking. Malangnya ade sebuah keter kancil parked kat tengah2 meaning dier ambik 2 parking spaces.

LOL. Very well said.

How Bad is Bad

I've been studying the effects of bad oil against rotating machinery, to be specific on this particular gearbox which operates 24 hrs with input speed of 1500 rpm and gear ratio of 18. I've been looking closely at this machine for almost 6 month now and I have to say, it psychs me every time I think about it. It started off when I found a chipped or a better a way to say it, a spalled gear tooth.

Off course it didn't look right. In no time oil quality issues came right up in my mind as I found lotsa pitting points on other teeth as well. Bad oil will surely contribute to this kinda problem but why oil turns bad? It's only been a year and why is it that bad? When I asked the OEM (in my case is SUMITOMO, damn japanese, can you please design a more reliable gearbox?) they said, "Just follow the manual" and thank god their english are good, I could understand 'em clearly but that didn't help at all man!!!

It has to be the oil, it has to be the oil... I said to myself again & again. Micropitting can be caused by a too-thin oil film i.e a higher viscosity oil is needed and/or oil is badly contaminated. I forgot to mention, the oil foamed badly when we opened up the gearbox which suggests i) air entered the gearbox from loose piping or broken seal ii) too much detergent effect: detergent cleans the formation of debris from combustion at the gear teeth, which later suggests a more thicker oil is needed & iii) contamination.

So, I guess it's time for oil analysis now. We sent 3 sampels which two of them are the used oil (1 year old, used oil) and the other one is a fresh-from-an-unopen-barrel oil for base reading. SUPrisingly, the new oil is as bad the used oil!!! I mean contamination wise! TAN is slightly high than the used one but you have to remember Acid Number curve againts time is bath tub shape meaning it starts off high, goes down and goes back up again. So TAN is not the issue here. Hmmm Petronas didn't do a good job when blending this oil. So I came up with an idea or better yet a program which we'll only accept oil with cleanliness cert i.e QA/QC cert to ensure the new oil is fresh! One day will be implemented.

Now, WAY FORWARD?? Now we change the oil once in every two month and using a fully synthetic oil which posses a better Vicosity Index compared to Mineral Oil. It's expensive but worth every penny. So whenever you find spalling teeth, act quickly as the gearbox will fail in no time. It might be months, weeks... ummm maybe days. Stay sharp guys, eyes on the oil!!!

Kabsah... Kabsah... Kabsah... A great food indeed and what a great night that was with all the jokes and laughing. There were like 30 of us eating and hangin' out... most of of them are Izni's frens I guess. Nazriq, Hafiz and a few other Vandy guys were there as well. Al-Rawsha, well not the best Arab place that I've been to, but MasyaAllah brother (say it in arabic-like tounge) GOOD enough to remedize my tastebuds with all the spices and heat. Talkin' bout heat, I sweated alot in my new shirt... shouldn't wear it in the very first place, cis!! sigh~

And yeah thanks to Nabilah for the errrmmm..... I don't know what's the food called. Anyway thanks a lot Nabilon!!!! But hey the drinks were on me??? aint it??? I reserve my thanx then LOL..... Nabilah jom lepak lagi, I got 3 more weeks of cuti bergaji!!!

It was a fun nite nonetheless =) Baba time kasih la for the ride... esok pick up aku lagi. Janji melayu xper jangan janji pak itam sudah haha.

MSDS of Women

First of all, what the hell is MSDS? Well, Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS is pretty much a guidance/facts sheet or I'd rather say more like a properties form where you can find all the basic properties of a material i.e boiling, flash, pour, viscosity index, toxicity, and even the "hazardousity" of that particular material. *Sometimes they refer to to Chemical Safety Data Sheet (CSDS) for basic properties of a chemical. Something that I would use in my daily job. I usually refer to MSDS or CDSD before using that material/chemical to avoid problem in the long run. It can cause you your life man if you just use a thing without knowing about it.

Anyway, due to high demand from my Get2knowledge's blog groupies & addicts (Wow do they really exist? I believe they do you skeptics!! I BELIEVE... I said it with my head nodding), so once again I'll share my engineering knowledge about women with you guys!!!

THE MSDS of Women

But apparently, the CSDS of Women is different depending on whether it's an organic compound or non-organic compound. However, this MSDS is good enough to guide you whenever you're using 'it', doesn't matter organic or non-organic alike.

Remember learn about woman MSDS before meeting her, and perhaps if you want to get to know more about her, ask for her CSDS. And I'm pretty sure it's either she gets hooked up or you get hooked by her right-handed-slam!! Ouucchhh..~

Hope this helps =)

Acc in the Hospital Part II

Aduhh sakitnya. Got admitted to hospital balik semalam. But this time it's not bcoz of that knee problem, it's kidney stone lah pulak. Memang sakit, sekarang pun tengah sakit nak tulis pon susah nie. Ya Allah perit nya ujian yang diberi...

Umme-Salamah Radiyallahu 'anha, the wife of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam, narrated: I heard Rasulullah Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam saying "Never a slave of Allah, afflicted with a calamity, who says (the following words), except that Allah will grant him for his calamity better than that"

"Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'oon. Allahumma'jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairam-minha"

Verily unto Allah we belong, and unto Him shall we return. O Allah! Reward me in my calamity, and grant me from it something better than that.

Accidentally in the Hospital?

Memang sakit la, rasa cam kener siat kulit... and dayymn, it hurts so bad. Do that for 15 minutes everyday, enough to make my skin rotting haha.

Alhamdulillah ALLAH masih memanjangkan usia saya.

Fooh, bila la agak nye nk masuk keje balik nie. Tetiba rasa cam seorang workaholic haha. Sebenarnya rasa kesunyian duk umah nie plus x boleh berjalan, kaki boleh bend for 15 deg jer... hmmm (melepaskan perasaan seperti seorang pompuan lah pulak hahah).

OK change topic sket, what do engineers think about women? (rasa cam jauh sangat topic changed nie). My boss taught me this and surprisingly during last assesment I got A+ :

But, recently when I was trimming my beard in front of a mirror in my bathroom, I discovered this on my own:

1) Woman = problems --> (1)
2) Solution + promblems = problemsolved --> (2)
3) According to ancient Chinese Book, Men = solution --> (3)

from eq (2): Solution + problems = problemsolved
subtitute eq (3) & (1) into eq (2)

:. Men + Woman = problemsolved /:

Conclusion is, if you hate "that" woman, marry her and problem solved!! LOL

Swifty Flow

I'm not a big fan of country music to begin with, but living in Nashville for 4 years kinda have like a butterfly-effect on me, til NOW. Well, I still listen to country songs once in a while to muse over all the good times that I had when I was in Nashville.

OK back to the main topic guys. I heard this song White Horse from Taylor Swift and I said, "hey, this is one good song from this young singer". I started downloading the whole album "Fearless" and now I can say, "Feel 'fearless' to country song"! The whole album sounds really great so worth my time downloading it.

And I'm surprised to hear that Colbie Caillate (not so sure how to spell her name) is in the album as well. The song "breathe" was written by Colbie & Taylor. Can you imagine how great the song is when that mellowish colbie-like rythm twanged by a modern country style? Better get the album and listen to it yourself. Dayymn, I miss Nashville.... LOL

Anyhow, great music from T-swizzle

45

I came across this article in an "FW"ed email from my friend, Raja. It's written by Regina Brett, a 90-year-old woman of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland,Ohio

"To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written."

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends & parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. *Skipped* religiously irrelevant
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words ''In five years, will this matter?".
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. *Skipped*

35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's,
we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift =)

How nice. She also relates some of the lessons with "friendship". Well, friends are important as "Friends are the family you choose for yourself". But are friends really friends? LOL hopefully

Wow growing older sure teaches us alot. Anyway, I remember asking a few times "How old are you?" to my technical coach, a 67 yo Filipino. But he always replied "Hmm, I forgot. I think 50, coz I stop counting my age when I was 49". Great!

Toyota MR-2 Spyder or so called MRS. A mid-engined, rear-drive, two-passenger sport car which everyone tries not to buy for the sake of their children. NO SEAT FOR THEM lar!!!

I'd say it's a very lite drive compared to other performance car i.e Imprezza & Evo, well it's not even a performance car, at least from my pov. Sorry Spyder owners! lol Nonetheless you can still feel that G-force when you're going 0-100 in about 7 secs, can be less though. That's good enough for me I guess. Wt some mods, perhaps with small TD04, a nice air intake, etc.. you'll get your 4-6 secs.

It's like a regular car btw. It's just that, I love sport car period. I'm planning to get another sport car one day... even after I got married, the passion never dies!!! *hopefully* hehe. I'm still learning about the car though, the engine, how to improve and so on. Still a long way to go.

Enough with the promotion. It's hard to describe it in words... give me a call, I'll be more than happy to take you for a ride in my little Spyder! Don't expect too much out of it, it's not a new car and having said that, I need to do some mods sooner or later, apearrance & performance-wise.

~ in 3 years it will be a bigger & better spyder InsyaAllah. I'll be 26 at that time and ready to make some "moves" =)

One thing i need to improve wt the car seriously.... I need a hard top pleeaaasseee...~

Oil whirl within Journal Bearings

Oil whirl is probably the most common cause of subsynchronous instability in hydrodynamic journal bearings. Typically, the oil film itself flows around the journal to lubricate and cool the bearing. This develops an average speed slightly less than 50 percent of the journal surface speed (Figure 1).

Normally, the shaft rides on the crest of an oil pressure gradient, rising slightly up the side of the bearing somewhat off vertical at a given, stable attitude angle and eccentricity. The amount of rise depends on the rotor speed, rotor weight and oil pressure. With the shaft operating eccentrically relative to the bearing center, it draws the oil into a wedge to produce this pressurized load-carrying film.

Figure 1. Oil Film Within a Journal
1

If the shaft receives a disturbing force such as a sudden surge or external shock, it can momentarily increase the eccentricity from its equilibrium position. When this occurs, additional oil is immediately pumped into the space vacated by the shaft. This results in an increased pressure of the load-carrying film, creating additional force between the oil film and shaft. In this case, the oil film can actually drive the shaft ahead of it in a forward circular motion and into a whirling path around the bearing within the bearing clearance. If there is sufficient damping within the system, the shaft can be returned to its normal position and stability. Otherwise, the shaft will continue in its whirling motion, which may become violent depending on several parameters.

- James E. Berry, Technical Associates of Charlotte, PC

Oil Whip Instability

Oil whip occurs on those machines subject to oil whirl when the oil whirl frequency coincides with and becomes locked into a system’s natural frequency (often a rotor balance or critical speed frequency). If we take an example, when the rotor speed increased to just above 9,200 RPM, its speed increased to 2X its first balance natural frequency. At this time the oil whirl which was approximately 43 percent of RPM, was brought into coincidence with this critical speed. The oil whirl was suddenly replaced by oil whip - a lateral forward precessional subharmonic vibration of the rotor. At this point, the oil whip frequency remains the same, independent of the rotor RPM. Note that the oil whip frequency never changed even though the machine continued up in speed to 12,000 RPM. When a shaft goes into oil whip, it's dominant dynamic factors become mass and stiffness in particular; and its amplitude is limited only by the bearing clearance. If it's not being corrected, oil whip may cause destructive vibration resulting catastrophic failure – often in a relatively short period of time.

So make sure:

  1. check your bearings (i.e clearance etc)
  2. oil specs, viscosity-wise and type
  3. oil pressure and temperature
  4. leakage
  5. internal damping
A slight mistake will cause you thousands of dollars. Sometimes 30 seconds mistake will cost you 100k (if it involves compressors) and it will be your most expensive lesson ever. Common mistake is temperature, so watch your temp!!

I like the smell of ...

MasyaAllah begitu cepat masa berlalu.

"Fear of newness does trigger your stress. But stress is good, use it to optimize your performance rather than worrying about it" - chewah, words of wisdom nie ciptaan sendiri LOL

Sehingga sekarang saya masih lagi menyesuaikan diri dgn suasana kerja lasak saya ni. Untuk pengetahuan semua, I'm working in a petchem plant where life can be 'shorten' just by hearing the should-wear-double-hearing-protection noise from the compressors and the sharp tangy-like smell of innocent looking ammonia. I'm a mechanical maintenance guy, more on rotating equipments though (i.e rotary engineer). The day I stepped my right foot into the ammonia plant, was the day they decided to shut down the plant. Teng-teng-teng (Action-like backround music starting to roar, pretty much like the medical checkup story) Meaning I got a hell lotsa works to do. But this is the best time to learn. Haha you'll never know how tough it was unless you work in a plant. Correction, not was but is. It is TOUGH! Yeah you rite there, thank you for asking, I mostly do work 7 days a week!

Maka my learning curve is spiking high way harder than the practical students because, I'm paid to do work and at the same to learn as well. It's not an easy job. I remember going to work a couple of weeks ago at 8 in the morning and I got back home 4.30 am the next day. Then I woke up at 8, went to work at 9 am the same day & got back at 2 am the next day. This is my life. Which is takde life LOL. I'm not working for the money (though it's partially true LOL), it's responsibility and you gots to finish what you have started.

"Bukan senang nak cari duit"

Now I know the meaning behind it. The more you get the more you will spend it and the more you want it. But don't get me wrong, I do spent my money on things that I like. If I don't then, there's no meaning risking my life everyday in the plant, I could die instantly here. Tapi berpada-padalah dalam spending tue lol.

"If not, then who's going to"

?? (Plus tinggal kat area sini memang bosan) and I can't find the answer for it. But one thing for sure, I like what I'm doing and believe me not everybody want's to do what I'm doing (I actually did ask the interviewer to put me in a plant though, and here I am LOL). It's risky, it's dirty, it's nasty (hyperbola lak ayat aku nie), and very challenging. I do this job because it's fun and if I don't do it, who is going to?

Guys, frens, & everybody, stay sharp & good luck in life!

*yeah I'll upload some pics later. Cool ones. Sangat busy at the moment (I can't believe myself writing this blogpost at cybercafe, sedey sungguh... rumah pun xde streamyx lagi, jauh kene gi Dungun cari TM point!!! bila masa nk pergi tue?? LOL)
